***Boxing = 50% mental + 40% conditioning + 10% skill***
The mental is the hardest to master.

*****Training is 95% physical + 5% mental...
until you step into the ring then it is
95% mental + 5% physical...hmmm!!!

Duke Davis vs Pierre Oulette
Maritime Championship
Duke lost to split decision

October 24, 2009
PEI

Mike "The Hammer" McGrath vs Cyrus Taylor
 Mike won by split decision
Zack Attach Ward vs Chadron Derail of Ell River NB
Zack lost a very hard match

Results:
First up was Zackary Ward in the 40 kg class going at it in a 3 round bout with Chadron Derail of Ell River NB, Zack live up to his nickname
Zack (Attack) Ward ! He boxed a very close hard fight in the 1st round,
butlost lost his cool and focus and went on the attack in the last two
rounds losing a split decision to his shaper opponent. But Zack is only 12 years
old as of Sunday and his journey has just begun with only 6 bouts under his belt.
This young student of the sweet science has so much to learn and
all the time in the world to do it.

Next up was Mike "The Hammer" McGrath and Mike laid his hammer down
this past Saturday night in the main event of the evening. Pounding out a 4
round shut out of one of the Canada Game hopefuls Cyrus Taylor of Middleton NS,
in the 69 kg class. Mike is letting his hands go with 6 and 8 punch combinations
and is using his lateral movement to take advantage of their miss and his counter
with great effect.

October 18, 2009
Rodeo Club, Dartmouth
Hosted By: City of Lakes

Duke Davis vs Artie Cousins
Mike MacGrath vs Brandon Osbourne
Mike Rector vs Kyle Cousins- cancelled

Results:
The first annual HRM tournament was held at the Rodeo Lounge in Dartmouth,
in conjunction with City Of Lakes ABC,head coach Gary Johnson.

First up was Travis Leil who boxed 3 very hard fought rounds with
Brandon Helif of Twin City ABC of Dartmouth. Travis was leading on the
score cards until midway threw the second round when Helif caught him
with a very hard body shot, which cost Travis a standing 8 count. Travis just
couldn't get back on track in the third round and
lost a close UD (unanimous decision).

Next up was Mike "The Hammer" McGrath boxing Brandon Osborne of the
host club City of Lakes ABC. Mike has really shown maturity and confidence
in his last few bouts and his hard work is paying off. You may remember these
two boxers mixed it up at our last Harry Trainor Memorial with Mike winning
by a UD and this match receiving Fight of the Night. Well Mike and Brandon
won fight of the night again on this show with Mike winning by a
score of 21 to 11 in this 4 x 2 min round  fight of the night with
Mike taking home a very nice belt and the 69 kg honors at the first
annual HRM tournament.

Next up was the big boys in the main event of the evening The Duke
Davis & Artie Cousin of the host club City Of Lakes ABC. In the superheavyweight division  which was  a very intense war for two rounds,
of which was supposeto be a 4 rounder when both combatants
were disqualified at the end of round  2.
At the end of the second round Duke had be landing some very hard shots on Mr. Cousin, after the bell Cousin tried to walk threw  Duke and bounced of him with Cousin's pushing at Duke causing a bit of a commotion and words ensued which brought on the disqualification for both boxers.

Some times emotions run too high in any sport, and this is the result.

2009 Junior, Youth and FTS
Canadian Nationals, Edmonton, Alberta
February 24 - 28, 2009

I would like to mention that Dukus Davis did not
attend the FTS in Edmonton. In all our efforts not enough $$$ was raised
to send all three boxers along with the coach. Dukus came to us and said he
was not going to Edmonton because he wanted the other two athletes to go.
Tommy wanted to send all three boxers and stay home himself but the boxers
refused to box without Tommy and Duke insisted that he stay home because
he had attended Nationals in Quebec. I would like to say we are very proud
of Dukus for being so thoughtful.

Westville Academy of Boxing were the Hosts for the
2009 Elite (Senior) Provincials,
held at Palooka's Boxing Club in Halifax on Dec 6, 2008.
*********************************************************
Well it was a great night of boxing in Halifax at the
2009  Elite Provincial Championships, hosted by
Westville Academy Of Boxing in conjunction with and held at Palooka's Gym.

We would like to thank Palooka's...
everyone went out of their way to help and or give their support.
Dr.Marsh went above and beyond and it really showed that he was concerned
with each athlete. Thank you all it was a pleasure!!

"The Duke" Davis won his provincial title by way of walk over with
no challengers in the super heavy weight division for the 6th year in a row.
Duke will be boxing at the Nationals in Trois Rivieres, Quebec,
along with 10 other senior elite male & female athlete from Nova Scotia
from January 21st to the 25th, 2009.

Travis Leil of our club and Jake Schofield of the Valley ABC, went at
for a 3 round match in the 54 kg youth division.Travis won all three rounds
in a very entertaining up and comers bout.

Mike McGrath 66 kg  Provincial Champ won a three round unanimous
decision over Brandon Osborne of City Of Lakes ABC.This was in the 69 kg class avenging a loss to Osborne last weekend in Cape Breton.

"Battlin" Bob Harris, 2008  57 kg National Champ and 60 kg
2009 Provincial Champ, went at it with Joey Laviolette who is
2008 Senior National Champ. This was definitely a barn burner main event.
Bobby dropped the Senior Champ in the final seconds of the 4th round,
only to lose a very close 38/36 decision to the very battered Laviolette,
who was very happy to hear the final bell.

Bobby is only a first year junior boxer while Laviolette is a second year senior champion, this was also Bobby's first 4 round bout. Harris is a force to be reckoned with already, give this kid another year and the sky's the limit,
if he wants it.

RESULTS FROM :  Nov 29, 2008...Ring 73 Cape Breton
2009 Junior and Cadet C Provincials

Three boxers fought on the Ring 73 provincial championship card
this weekend in Glace Bay.
Bobby Harris, Mike MacGrath, and Matt Woodworth.

First up we had Matt Woodworth boxing in the 54 kg novice division against
Greg Battiest of the host club Ring 73 with Matt losing by way of RSCOC,
(ref stopped contest out scored) in the second round. This is the same way Matt had won last weekends' fight in Truro.

Mike McGrath won by way of walk over for his provincial title in the
66 kg class, to advance him a spot on the Cadet Provincial Team.
The team is heading to Edmonton, Alberta in February for the
Canadian National Championships.
Mike did fight on this card with Brandon Osborne who was the walk
over in the 69 kg division from City of Lakes ABC of Dartmouth.
Mike giving away a few pounds fought a 3 round bout with Osborne
losing by 2 points 15/13 on the score cards.

"Battlin" Bobby Harris went to war with Ryan McGrady of the South Shore ABC, in the 60 kg division. Bobby stopped McGrady in the second round,
by way of RSCOC, to win the 60kg Provincial Championship
and the right to box in Edmonton,Alberta at the
Canadian National Championships in February.
Bobby is the reigning 2008 57 kg National Champ and is
gaining some size so this is why he moved to the 60 kg class.

NOTE: This was Duke Davis's first time as acting Head Coach for Westville Academy because Tommy was away with the Pro Boxing Association. Duke did a terrific job along with Travis Leil working the corner as a second.
Great Job Guys!!!!!

Nov 22, 2008 Truro Boxing Club and Jim's Gym
Agradome, Truro

Well it was a very entertaining night of boxing in Truro last evening, with one of our new boxers Matt Woodworth in  his first fight stopping his opponent
Nick Denny of Jim's Gym of Sackville N.S.by (RSCOC) which is (Ref stopped contest out classed), Matt is a boxer that if he keeps his mind on the sweet science,
he will do well. Way to go Matt!!!!!

Battlin Bobby Harris 2008 National Champion put in another great performance and didn't disappoint the patrons. He fought Irish Christy Joyce who has 56 bouts compared to Bobby's 27. He is also the Schoolboy Champion of
Ireland. They both fought hard all 3 rounds, with Bobby winning all three rds, by way of unanimous decision.

All volunteers and members of our club did a great job! Thank You very much

Well it's over for another year, our 3rd annual Harry Trainor memorial was a success.
First of all we had a great attendance, and all bouts where very competitive. All the athletes
that came to this card were outstanding, displaying a great deal of class.

USA went home without a loss, in 7 bouts they won 6 by decision, and one by walk over when his opponent got a touch of stage fright. Yes they handed us our butts... but not without a fight.
Next year we will try again!!!!

Jorge Abiague who was to box Battling Bobby Harris, did not pass the medical due to
a hand injury sustained in training, which was a big disappointment to all. Also Russell Lamoure
of USA who boxed Curtis (pit bull) White of Cape Breton's Tommy Gordon Club, went home with the Harry Trainor Memorial award for most technically sound boxer of the card,
and winning by a score of 3/0.

Fight of the night went to Shawn Carter, Twin City ABC, over Chad Burns of Sydney ABC, with Carter winning the 3 rounder by 3/0. This choice award gets the boxers name on the Harry Trainor trophy for 2008 and sends them home with two smaller version's of there own.

Our own guys, we ended up with 2 fights and 3 exhibition, Travis (Bubba) Leil
did a three round exhibition with Carl Campbell of the Sydney ABC and learned that he can
box with older and more experienced guys, and hold his own. Travis has 11 bouts to Campbell's 26 bouts, Travis is only 12 years old and if he decides to follow the plan we have set out for him he will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.

Mike McGrath had to settle with an exhibition after his opponent called in sick.
Mike "The Hammer" and stable mate "Battling" Bobby Harris kept the crowd entertained with a fine display of slip and clip, and I must say the crowed seemed to enjoy it very much. At some points you forgot it was even an exhibition!

Our debut boxer Jason Cormier started things of fast and furious by dropping USA
opponent Ben Dunham within the first thirty seconds with a beautiful left hook. This was a very good match up of two eager to impress novice boxers. It kept the fans on the edge of their seats, Ben Dunham went home with bragging rights with a 3/0 decision over Jason.

Next up was our main event with "The Duke" Davis vs. Tamerlan Kuliev of Ontario,
formerly Russia in the super heavy division. This was a war you shouldn't have missed,
these two big hard punching young men put on a great display of give, take, and near miss,
with the Duke walking away with a split decision win.

Kuliev is trained by Boris Gitman 5 time Olympic coach of Ontario and formerly Russia,
so this was a very satisfying win for father and son team Tom and the Duke Davis.
Boris Gitman and Tamerlan didn't agree with the decision that night so they went back to
the hotel and watched the video. The following day they both confirmed to Tom that Duke did
win the match. What a great show of professionalism!!!

********************************************************

Westville Academy is very proud to be working with Colleen (Trainor) and her husband Greer Turner
again this year to promote our annual amateur boxing card.
Together we are promoting the past and the future
generation of amateur boxers...
in memory of
Colleen's father, Harry Trainor.

This year our competitors are from United States, we hope to have up to twelve
US verses NS bouts on our card.
Nova Scotia Boxing only allows 14 bouts and we intend to use all 14!!!

Remember June 28, 2008....
the excitement starts at 7:30 pm

We have a team of boxers coming from the USA from two different clubs, the coaches  are Bob Rouso and Keith Wyman. They are bringing  a very strong selection of eight Novice to Senior Boxers lined up.

We could only match up one of the female boxers coming from the USA, with  Nova Scotia's senior silver medalist from this year's nationals Chantal Doucette, who is from the Tiger ABC in the Valley.
She will going at it with Liz Leddy in the 57kg class, this will be a very entertaining
match up of experienced female boxers and the only female bout on the card.

We have a club from Bathurst N.B.coming in with four boxers, headed by coach Ken Roy of
The Boxe Acadie ABC with novice to senior boxers.

We had to search out to Ontario to find a match for "The Duke" Davis, two time super heavy Canadian National Champ of our own club, with a formidable opponent Tamerlan Kuliev formerly of Russia now residing in Ontario.Tamerlan is being trained by Boris Gitman of Ontario, formerly Russia and an Olympic coach, with many years experience at 72 years of age,

Our Own Canadian Champ in the 57kg class Battlin Bobby Harris will be testing his boxing
ability in an exhibition with USA 5 X golden gloves champ
Jorge Abiague in a match you  should not miss,

Travis "Bubba" Leil is another one of our young up and comers you will want to see in an
Exhibition match with Bronze medalist  Carl Campbell of Sydney ABC. Also we have
Jason Cormier in his debut taking on Ben Dunham of the USA in the 70kg  senior  class.

We have boxers from all over Nova Scotia taking part in this years event.
The Tommy Gordon Club of Florence Cape Breton will be bringing Light Heavy, Gold Medalist
Kyle Patterson to box at this years event along with Silver Medalist Daniel Jessom
to box one of our own Mike "The Hammer" McGrath in the 66kg class. They will also be
bringing a super heavy novice and senior boxer Curtis "PIT BULL" White
who will be boxing a strong boxer from USA and Golden Gloves Champ
Russell Lamour in the 70kg class,

We have two boxers from Sydney ABC boxing on this card,
We have two boxers from Twin City ABC in Dartmouth taking part in this years event,
along with the South Shore club
with one boxer matching up with one of the USA boxers,

In all we have ten different clubs from USA to Cape Breton and we have worked hard at putting this together for the best display of boxing possible, and I think Harry would be proud of us.

***********************************************************************

Greenwood Community Center - May 31, 2008
hosted by Pegasus Boxing Club

Two of our boxers will square off tonight in the valley.

Mike "The Hammer" MacGrath
will take on  Mark Carson from  Annapolis Valley ABC.

Travis "Bubba"Leil will take on Jake Schofield also from Annapolis Valley ABC.
*******************************************************

FIST ABC - Moncton New Brunswick - April 19, 2008

Three of our members traveled to Moncton, NB this weekend  for a card hosted by the
FIST ABC.

First up was Mike"The Hammer"MacGrath against Robert MacMillian from PEI.
Mike came out slow in the first round but regrouped and performed
much better in thesecond and third rounds.
We thought Mike's performance in the last two rounds would win him the decision,
but two judges thought otherwise. Mike lost by split decision so at least one judge besides ourselves thought that he won.

Duke Davis had an exhibition against  Kyle Diehl from the host club.
Duke was able to put his reach to use, gliding around the ring, and also practicing some new combinations. Kyle was able to get a small taste of what is to come,
in a very respectful and controlled exhibition.

****Bobby Harris's and Charlie Lyon's bouts were both canceled.

In the 13th bout Travis "Bubba" Leil went at it with Mathew Hiltchy from the host club.
Travis was unable to get in under Mathew's extra 6 inch reach but he
was by far the aggressor in this match. When Travis is scheduled to box that is
exactly what he does and all his opponents know he was there.

**********************************************************

Golden Gloves ABC - St.John's New Brunswick - April 12, 2008

Four of our boxers returned from a card being hosted by the Golden Gloves ABC of
St John, NB on paper they are all taking loses in our hearts they won.

Travis "Bubba" Leil was scheduled to box a rematch with Mathew Hiltchy of the Fist ABC, of Moncton NB, in the 57 kg class. This match was canceled because Mathew Hiltchy was unable to control his nerves and became physically sick before the bout. Another rematch is scheduled for this weekend in Moncton.

Next up Charlie Lyons vs.   of the host club, this match was Charlie's best showing!! Charlie was robbed of the decision, but he knows he won and that is all that matters. These two boxers will have a rematch this weekend in Moncton.

Mike the Hammer McGrath boxed Tyrell Vail of the host Golden Gloves ABC, in the 66kg class. this was a very close match with Mike not being busy enough to edge out over Tyrell, final score being 12-13. Again we are hoping to rematch this bout in June at the Harry Trainer Card  scheduled for June 28th in Westville.

The Duke Davis boxed NB Senior Champion Adam Black in a super heavyweight match. Duke gave away the first round but in the second and third rounds he had Adam on shaky legs more than once. The judges voted for their home town hero which left Dukus with the a bad decision. It also didn't help that the host club refused to go the normal 4 rounds for juniors and seniors, now that Duke will be moving to senior these two will meet again in a neutral province....hmmmm....I wonder what will happen then???

**********************************************************

Cape Breton Casino - March 29, 2008

First up was Mike McGrath going at it with Daniel Jessom of the Tommy Gordon ABC,
this was a hard fought fast paced
bout, with Jessom just being busier winning the decision

Battling Bob Harris national featherweight champ totally dominated, Ryan McGrady of South Shore ABC, dropping him for a mandatory 8 count in the first round, and winning a unanimous decision in this very entertaining  3 round bout.

Next up Charlie Lyons fought a hard fought 3 round bout with bronze medalist Carl Campbell
losing a unanimous decision. Charlie is looking better every time out.

The Duke Davis just didn't have enough in the tank, after fighting a bout of intestinal flu early in the week leading up to this bout.He just couldn't find the energy to throw enough scoring blows to win this very hard fought 4 round bout over Edvin Ghahramanyan, a Russia immigrant who resides in Ontario, and is raining 2008 National heavyweight champion.

No doubt these two will be meeting again, with a return engagement set for the 3rd annual Harry Trainor Memorial scheduled for Saturday June 28th at the Westville sports complex (rink).

Friday, February 29, 2008

For those that are not aware, Jack Carter of the Twin City Amateur Boxing Club died suddenly at home on Friday, February 29, 2008. His boxing career included: Atlantic Command Lightweight Champion, two-time Canadian Featherweight Champion, Canadian Lightweight Champion Finalist, World Featherweight Championship Finalist. With a professional record 44 fights 39 wins, three losses and two draws. Jack was also inducted into the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame.

Many years after retiring from his own boxing career, Jack found himself back in the squared circle. In his 60's Jack had no intention of making a "comeback" but instead inspiring his young grandson Shawn. Jack and Shawn became inseparable and attended the gym as often as possible. Jack's passion for the sport was reflected the younger Carter. Their proudest moment and accomplishment was on November 10, 2007 when Shawn won the Nova Scotia Provincial Championship Title.

Jack will be sadly missed in the Nova Scotia boxing community; most of all by Shawn Carter. Shawn not only lost his Coach, manager, match maker, mentor, and grandfather, but his best friend as well.

UPDATE: Shawn Carter is now training with Bob Tapper from Twin City Boxing Club. I for one am thankful that Shawn decided to return to the ring to continue with his and his grandfather's dream. Shawn certainly has the talent and the heart to be a Champion and they could not have picked a better coach. Jack would be proud as he always was!!!!

RIP Jack Carter!!!

February 27, 2008

Head Coach Tom Davis was appointed to the Board of the Nova Scotia Boxing Authority. It is a great privilege to be part of the team.

Berwick, Nova Scotia - Feb 23, 2008

First up was Charlie Lyons in the 54 kg class, with Charlie boxing a more experienced
Cyrus Taylor of the Pegasus Boxing Club. Taylor was a bronze medalist from 07 Canadian Nationals. Charlie had his hands full with Taylor, losing a 3 round decision to the more experience.

Next up was Travis (Bubba) Leil, putting up a very good showing of himself with a taller opponent from FIST ABC, Moncton NB. Mathieu Hachey.
This bout could have been won by either,  Bubba ended up losing by a score of 12/10, with a rematch already scheduled for an April card in NB.

Mike( THE HAMMER) McGrath fought the best he ever has, and ended up losing a close 3 round decision to 2008 Silver Medalist of Tommy Gordon ABC from Cape Breton. We and many in attendance thought that Mike had won this bout, but the judges saw it in favor of Daniel Jessom,

This one will be a rematch for a future card.

************************************************

Halifax casino fight night - Feb 7, 2008

It was redemption night for 2007 super heavy champ The Duke Davis going at it in a 4 round match with 2008 champ Johnny Rill.

With the Duke winning in all 4 rounds, giving Rill a standing 8 count in rounds 2 & 3, and having him on shaky legs more than once in all 4 rounds.

Duke  followed the game plan, that was set out in the gym no mental games tonight.

This was one of the most valuable learning experience's for Duke, after losing a gold medal match to Rill at nationals  and coming back and proving that he is the better boxer!!!

************************************************************

Canadian Junior & Cadet Nationals in Windsor Ontario - Jan 24-27, 2008

Bobby Harris won the 57 kg Canadian Championship in Windsor Ontario. He boxed Tommy Cote from Quebec with a finally score of 17 - 15. Great performance Bobby!!!

Team Manager Bruce Harkness, Canadian Champion Bobby Harris, and Coach Tom Davis

Dukus Davis took home the silver in the Super Heavyweight division after a loss with Johnny Rill from Ontario.  This match actually started two days before they landed in the ring. Johnny followed Duke around the hotel 2 days before the match to get in his head mentally. Don Nelson who was Dukus coach for his Germany trip is also Johnny's coach, so he knew Duke had very little experience with the mental aspect of the game. By the time these two athletes hit the ring Duke was furious and was in kill mode which through all his previous plans out the window. Johnny had Duke exactly where he wanted him and took the Canadian title. Don Nelson came over and talked to Duke after the match and explained that it was all part of his plan and Duke told him it worked, a rematch was scheduled for two weeks later down here in NS at the casino.

Boxing = 50% mental + 40% conditioning + 10% skill

Mike McGrath  returned home after his loss against Martin Halibus from Ontario. Very good experience for Mike, being the first time at a national event. Next year he will know what to expect!!!! Good job Mike!!

******************************************************************
Testing Camp

Westville Academy of Boxing hosted a Provincial Testing Camp on
January 6 from 9 am until 5 pm.

The testing camp was a perfect way to help show the athletes some of the things they will need to
improve in order to compete with the other boxers from across Canada. The boxers that
participated in the day long testing were eager to push themselves to their limits,
this is exactly what they will encounter in Ontario. We feel all the athletes did a tremendous job in their challenge and are quite capable of competing with the best. Congratulations to all of you and good luck in Ontario we will be cheering for each of you!!!!!

Six Nova Scotia clubs took advantage of this testing day, Pegasus ABC, Tiger Club, Citadel,
Jim's Gym, Sydney and of course, Westville Academy. To see all these athletes push themselves
and especially each other was one of the high points of the day. Another high point was to see
the boxers relate to Ricky Anderson, deeper than anticipated. The athletes also ate lunch
together and they all communicated as a team, which was great!!

Ricky interacted with the boxers directly and gave them some great insight. To see the athletes
actually enjoy a speaker proved to us that Ricky was definitely the right choice for this group and
we feel no one could have done a better job or could have touched these boxers the way he did.
They will definitely take some of  what he said to Ontario.
Thanks Ricky!!!! Thanks to all clubs who made this a success!!!

Well we have an interesting weekend coming up Sunday 6th, 2008.
We are hosting a test and tune camp for our provincial champs who are heading off to
the nationals from Jan 24th to the 27th 2008, in Windsor Ontario.

This camp will give our athletes a day to forge a better relationship with each other and
find out just what they have to work on in the next couple of weeks before the
Canadian Nationals. This also gives the boxers some quality sparring with each other,
which some clubs just can't get.

All clubs with Provincial Team athletes were invited to attend from cadets to seniors.

There will be testing, nutrition information and also a motivational speaker.
Ricky Anderson will be the speaker for this camp, we don't think anyone else
could be more qualified than Ricky.

Ricky Anderson

Ricky Anderson's dreams have taken him a long way. It's not a future he would have
predicted growing up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. However, he discovered he had a talent
for the sweet science that propelled him to the top of the amateur boxing world.
After winning a gold medal in the North American Championships and two silvers in world
championship competitions, he turned pro and captured the prestigious
Canadian Welter-Weight title and was inducted to the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame.
While boxing Ricky attained a university degree in Sociology.
Later he was a Television Sports Broadcaster. Today he works as a Drug Prevention Specialist
and he's the President of Go Ricky Motivational Services and a sought after speaker
in demand year round. He is married and the father of two sons. His passion is helping
people turn their dreams into reality.

Dec 9, 2007...Atlantic Challenge Cup in Windsor

Well it was a very entertaining afternoon of boxing, bouts got under way at 2.30 pm,

First...  Bobby Harris's opponent was a no show because
of an injury, John Thomas of NFL,

Next...Travis( Bubba) Leil 57 kg - lost a very close 3 round bout on points,
this one could have went either way, with Jonathan Chambers
of the home town club going away with the win, Valley ABC of Windsor,

Travis is getting better each time out, and this won't be the
last time these two meet !!

Mike McGrath won his 3 round bout against Mark Carson of host club Valley ABC,
this was a easy win for Mike who is the provincial champ,in the 66kg class,
this was a good win for Mike in his preparations for
Nationals in Jan 23 to the 27th in Windsor Ont.

Nov 24...New Brunswick

Well we had an interesting night in Moncton N.B., the card itself was
fast paced. It was quite a show, from the beginner to the elite caliber , the sweet science of boxing.
The people in the Moncton area just love their combat sports, especially boxing,

First up ... our newest  boxer Travis Leil, (aka..Bubba) with his 6th bout under his belt
this was another good exhibition for Travis' learning of the sweet science, looking good in a
three round exhibition against  Austin Depres from the host club F.I.S.T.ABC

Next up...Mike McGrath was just not in his bout mentally, he came out very strong in the first
round and did well, but in the last 2 rounds he got into a brawl with a brawler and let
Robert Macmillan of the PEI, ABC  walk away with a 2-1 win in this
hard fought battle of three rounds in the 66 kg class-145lb,
Mike will be working hard in the next week on his mental game just as hard as his physical.

We have an invitation to box in Sydney on Saturday with Newfoundland coming over.
We have 3 of our boxers lined up for this amateur boxing card Dec 1st,

Mike McGrath -66 kg class 145lb, provincial champ will be going at it with Jordan Young of NFL,

Charlie Lyons-57-kg class,125lb, will be battling it out with John Thomas of ,NFL,

Travis (Bubba) Leil- 60 -kg class, 130 lb, will be doing battle
with Jonathan Chambers, (RIP) Bobby Beaton's great-grandson of the Valley Boxing Academy.

Nov 10.... Cadet and Junior Provincials
Kentville, Nova Scotia

Well, Westville Academy had 3 boxers attend Provincials in hopes of a challenge for the Provincial Titles in their weight class. Duke Davis, Bobby Harris, and Mike MacGrath were ready to challenge anyone for the spot to respresent Nova Scotia at the Canadian Nationals in Windsor Ontario,
January 24-28,2008.
1st up...The Duke Davis won his JR Provincial championship again this year by way of walk over, meaning no one to challenge him...super heavy class 91+ kg class (201 lbs & over). He will be in Ontario to defend his Super Heavyweight Title, where there are definitely contenders.
2nd up...Battlin Bob Harris won his Cadet C 54 to 57 kg class (119 to 125.5 lbs) by way of walk over. While there Bobby was able to box a very fast pace hard fought 3 round fill in bout with a Jr class boxer Ryan McGrady of the south shore ABC, with Bob winning  by 3-0 decision. Bobby will also represent Nova Scotia in his weight class at the Nationals.
3rd...Mike McGrath won by way of walk over in the 63 to 66 kg class(138.6 to 145.2 lbs) and had a very tough fill in bout with Daniel Jessom of Tommy Gordon ABC of Cape Breton.
Jessom was bronze medalist from last February's Canadian Nationals in St Catherine's Ont, while Mike lost this 3 round bout he gained so much in confidence and learning from
Jessom, this was Mike's break in bout of 10 to open class, while this was Jessom's 26 th and not a easy one for him! Mike caught Jessom with a hard right uppercut at the end of round 2 dropping him to the canvas necessitating a mandatory standing 8 count, with the bell ending this round right after the 8 count, the third being very fast paced,as well.
Mike will be a force to be reckoned with in armature boxing if he chooses to do so.
The Westville Academy is very proud of all three boxers, even though they didn't box to get their titles they all trained very hard and were ready for anyone who was waiting.
Good Luck at the Nationals guys!!!!

On Nov 3.....
Three of our boxers headed to Fredericton New Brunswick

Battlin' Bobby Harris, Cody Hoover, and Mike MacGrath were ready to take on just about anyone!!
Bobby was scheduled to battle with Mitch Cormier, a two time Canadian Champion from Barley's Boxing club in NB. Cody was scheduled to do an exhibition with Carl Cambell,2007 Canadian National Medalist, from Sydney Boxing Club from NS, and Mike was willing to take on anyone that was left over.
1st up...Cody Hoover looked phenomenal in his introduction to the boxing ring, no one could have guessed that it was his first time in the ring, definitely look for Cody to make his mark in amateur boxing. We would also like to thank Carl Campbell for his experience and the professional way he conducted himself during this exhibition.
2nd...Battlin'Bob certainly lived up to his name, he came out battling from the first bell and in just over 1 minute he gave Mitch a standing 8 count, when the match resumed Bobby didn't let up and the bout was stopped at 1:22 minutes in the first round. This is Bobby's 1st TKO. Watch for Bobby to make his mark at the Canadian National's in Jan.Watch this match on youtube!!
3rd...Mike MacGrath didn't get a chance to box this weekend but he was definitely ready, instead he was a second in the corner with coach Tom Davis.Mike did a great job and it was a very good experience for him to see from the corner.

On Sept 15....

Two of our boxers traveled to Cape Breton to participate on a Casino Card hosted by Membertou Boxing Club....

Well it was a very interesting night of boxing at the Sydney Casino Saturday night,
1st up...Charlie Lyons won a split decision over Crag Batiste of host club Membertou in a very exciting 3 rounds of boxing

Next up... was supposed to be an Exibition with the Duke Davis and Mike Cusak of host club Membertou, Cusak came out with no respect for the Duke and seemed to have no care that this was an Exibition for his own learning purpose. Duke handed him a stiff boxing lesson that Cusak won't soon forget, with 2 standing 8 counts in the 2nd round and finally a 3rd round stoppage by way of RSC.

Coach's remarks...It's to bad that some of the up and comers in boxing
do not show respect to the more experienced boxers in these Exhibitions so they might learn from them instead of going home embarrassed. It is also a shame that they do not have more respect for the sport of boxing.
Show Respect And You Will Get  Respect!!

Dukus Davis(Red)and "Iron Mike" Cusack(Blue)

On August 24...Four boxers along with Coach Davis traveled to the Digby Arena to participate in a pro-am card hosted by Valley Boxing, here are the results...

Well it was a great night of boxing in Digby N.S. last night....

1st up...our youngest up and comer 11 year old Travis Leil in
an exhibition bout with Jonathan Chambers (AVBC). Travis gave
Chambers a boxing lesson, Travis is a very good prospect for the future of boxing if he chooses to do so.

Next up...Donald Keddy, losing by (RSC) Ref Stopped Contest, in the second rd,to Jordan Smith of Tri-County ABC,of Yarmouth, this was a very exciting bout until the stoppage with a body shot.

Next...was our own Mike McGrath in a very entertaining bout with Tyler Benjamin of (AVBC) with Mike dropping a close decision to Tyler. Mike was just not busy enough in this one.

The Duke Davis... looked great in winning this one by unanimous decision, this was a very good show of the improvements in Duke's skill and power with Duke having Chambers on shaky legs in all 3  rounds. This was a long time coming!!!!!

Coach Tom
